Turnkey homes in Northland

New Zealand Artisan Woodworker. Creating, right here at home.

Hi, I'm Tim

I was born and raised in Central Hawke’s Bay. I trained originally as a diesel mechanic, but most locals will know me from the years I've spent running a mobile sawmill around the district.

I now spend my days building solid, made-to-last wooden furniture. This has been a goal of mine for a long time. I’ve always loved wood, and have never had much time for cheap, throwaway items.

I’m offering some items ready for sale as well as the commission of bespoke pieces. I aim to charge fair and transparent prices based on the hire of my time and expertise, my equipment, and the materials.

I enjoy problem-solving and making unique pieces which incorporate personal or historic elements. The goal is for us to work together on your vision. If you want to know whether I can help create what you are looking for, reach out via the details on my contact page. Or, alternatively, browse my gallery to see more of my creations as a proud New Zealand Artisan Woodworker.

Sustainability

My business model is focused on sustainability.

The trees are cleared or fall naturally on local properties. I mill them myself, process and treat them with my homemade Danish oil to build furniture which goes to local homes, and there (I hope) they will stay for several generations.

My particular skillset allows me to reduce waste. I give my time to clear trees after major weather events and often receive the wood as Koha. The processing of this wood can cost more than it's worth, so it would often be burned or left to rot. Only a small portion of a tree is furniture quality, and lower quality sections are frequently cut out and binned. I carefully grade the timber, saving the high quality for furniture and using lower quality pieces for rough projects such as workshops, simple constructions or functional outdoor items.

The passion for reducing waste has led to one major problem: I now have an awful lot of wood.

Aside from the creation of beautiful artisan furniture, I’m selling bulk timber from my woodyard and cut-to-order sets of processed wood for joiners/carpenters.

"Tim began making furniture over 30 years ago, just before his eldest son was born. The first thing he built was a table. Over the years, the household has become full of wooden items. If he could make it, we couldn't buy it!

The original table became a craft table and was splattered with paint, was stomped all over as a stage for dance displays and magic shows, regressed to a beer pong table and eventually went with his youngest when she moved into a Wellington flat.

On her final move, it was discovered that the table didn’t fit through the door. Tim was happy for it to be sacrificed; he couldn't believe he had ever made such a weak piece. Even so, it took some time, a hammer, a lot of kicking, and eventually a chainsaw to break apart this 30-year-old "weak piece!" Its top was rescued, however, and was present at her wedding. "
